Sarai Kharbuza is one of the union councils in Islamabad. It is located near Tarnol and has extreme poverty and a lack of education, especially for girls. According to the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE), Tarnol has the highest number of out-of-school children in Islamabad. PAGE has created a STAR School in this union council to ensure the provision of education to the underprivileged. The STAR School Sarai Kharbuza gives education to a total of 92 children that are residents of the area and has two shifts. The Sarai Kharbuza STAR school – I has 52 students out of which there are 31 girls and 19 boys. Girls of all ages, that stay at home come to STAR school in the morning along with some boys as well. The STAR school Sarai Kharbuza – I starts at 8 am.
This STAR school focuses upon providing education to the girls who cannot attend school because of the minimum income of the families and also because of the lack of availability of government schools in the area. The private schools that may be somewhere near are too costly for the parents. This leads to girls staying at home instead of going to school and getting an education. STAR School Sarai Kharbuza – I gives an opportunity to underprivileged and illiterate girls to have easy access to schools.
STAR school teacher Shafiqa shared that the majority of STAR school strength is girls, the parents happily and proudly send their girls to schools.
